Photography : The Art Of Composition.

Composing a Shot before pressing the shutter is an art

So you have your first DSLR, either you bought or some one gifted you. Great ! Its time to go out and take some shots. Off you are with the gear to the location, very excited to find a grand scene waiting for you, up goes your Camera, and Bang comes down the shutter, BINGO ! your first shot was taken in auto setting, you didn't like the result, very confidently the dialed was moved to manual.

Your second shot was worst then the first one. Something went wrong, or say that you have basic knowledge, but still the image is very mediocre.

Assuming that you have Basic knowledge and the image is well exposed, full of vibrant colors, great shot, but you feel like something is missing. Your image does not have that eye catching effect, it is simple shot, could have been taken by any Tom, Dick & Harry. You start wondering, Whats wrong, is it your Gear, Your Camera, your lens, the light, the time, you find nothing wrong - And you are absolutely right, nothing is wrong in the above equation, you know how to shoot, your Gear is OK, the light, the time every thing is OK. The culprit is someone else...........CONFUSED..?????

YOUR COMPOSITION WAS WRONG

Yes, a well exposed, colorful image could look boring or mediocre if it is not composed well, in the movement of excitement you over looked very important aspect of Photography.

So, what is composition, or How to compose a shot,

Every time you raise a camera to your eye you're composing a picture - the very act of deciding where to point it is based on a conscious or sub-conscious decision about what you want to include in the picture. The trouble is, many photographers don't spend enough time thinking about that composition before firing away, and nine times out of ten the end result is unbalanced and unstimulating.

So lets learn something about composition.

Point of interest.

Object guide the viewer's eye from one point to another through the photo. Look for object that lead towards your main subject. Avoid things that lead the viewer's eye out of the photo. Remember,
if it does not contribute, it should not be there.

Image building

With your point of interest safely in the frame, now its time to build an image around your object.
Don't neglect the foreground in your photos. Make the foreground work for you. Your subject is the visual center of your photo. The elements around your subject, such as the foreground, should play a supporting role. Use your creative brain to stitch together your subject and your object with the foreground.

Color Combination

Color is an important compositional element. There are colors all around you. Once you become aware of how effective color is in your photos you can deliberately seek it out. Some types of colors that work well in photos are the contrasting colors, complementary colors, supplementary colors, warm and cold colors.

Simplicity is the Best

If there's one overriding principle that will guide you well it's this - keep it simple. Decide what the most important elements of the photo are, and eliminate anything that doesn't contribute. Every part of your photo should be earning its keep. If it's not needed, leave it out. Your compositions will become simpler, bolder and more effective. Your photos will have more impact and your message will be communicated to the viewer with clarity.

Now go out use your newly acquired knowledge and take the shots. You have a unique talent, No one in this world is like you.
